Servathon 2009 Promotes Real Change in the DC Area
Servathon 2009 brings together thousands of
individuals for two days of marathon- style volunteer service. The event will
provide local nonprofits with critically needed volunteer support and make a
huge impact on the community in just two days.
WASHINGTON DC--With so much
need in today’s society and President Obama’s call to service, many people are searching for ways
to get involved. Servathon 2009 is an answer to that call. Servathon is a two
day event created by Greater DC Cares and is designed to be a marathon of
service and fundraising. Volunteers will engage in various environmental and
beautification projects across the National Mall, prepare and serve meals at
shelters, spend the day with the elderly, sort clothes at thrift stores, and so
much more.
Servathon 2009 will take place on Friday May 1, 2009 and Saturday, May 2, 2009 as thousands of volunteers from around the region serve at nonprofit organizations and public schools providing critical community services. “Servathon is an opportunity to make an immediate and long-lasting impact on the community in a very real way,” says Dr. Madye Henson, President and CEO of
Greater DC Cares.
Greater DC Cares (GDCC),
celebrating its 20-year anniversary, is a nonprofit organization that mobilizes
more than 12,000 volunteers to serve more than 500 nonprofits and schools each
year. GDCC provides thousands of hours of critical services and skills to the
region. Greater DC Cares is looking for any individuals, groups, or businesses
who are interested in making donations, volunteering their services, skills,
time and energy during this two-day event. Servathon 2009 will mobilize
thousands of volunteers to participate in service projects at area nonprofits
and schools.
Greater DC Cares is the
leading and largest coordinator of volunteerism in the DC region, and Servathon
is its main fundraiser, helping GDCC to provide its critical services and
community impact all year long. “Through our network of nonprofits, volunteers,
and corporate partners, Greater DC Cares positively impacts hundreds of
organizations in our community. By pulling together thousands of individuals
for the good of our region, Servathon perfectly
captures our mission to mobilize volunteers, strengthen nonprofits and impact
communities,” says Matt Schuyler, GDCC Board Chair.
